Do You Take Care Of An Elderly Or Sick Person? You May Want To Read This

Taking care of the elderly or a sick person is not an easy task. It can be very demanding leading to loss of health and confidence. Read on to cope with this.

A slow and steady improvement in lifespan has led to increasing number of elderly people among us. Most elderly people remain active and healthy even when they have certain chronic ailments like diabetes or high blood pressure. But invariably the elderly may become dependent for certain activities. Also diseases like stroke (paralysis), dementia. Alzheimer's. Parkinson, Cancer can make a person rely on someone else to help them with their daily activities.

Family and friends form the first support system to help. It is either the spouse or children who take up the responsibility of providing the needful care for the sick person. This person is called as Care Taker. Most of the times care takers have little training in managing sick or debilitated person.

The initial adjustments start from realigning their work schedule, social activities and personal time. Taking care of the near can becomes demanding resulting in loss of personal choices. There is also the additional stress of taking the decisions like which doctor to visit, whether to get second opinion or not, scheduling appointments with hospitals and taking them there. It can seem daunting.
It is a well established fact that people to take care of sick and elderly can have tremendous stress. This stress can make the person taking care of the near one to lose out on career growth, joys, fitness and health. It can also lead to feelings of guilt. The burden can be daunting. This can result in burnout. Well, there are ways in which you can prevent yourself from this burnout.

1. Take Care Of Yourself: Only when you are healthy and at your best you can take care of your loved one. You need time to refresh and rejuvenate. You can do that by exercising, Yoga, visiting friends or family, attending religious activities if you are religious while someone else takes care of your loved one for that period. Your continued well being is important to take care of your loved one.

2. Learn about the medical condition of your loved one: This way your fears and anxiety will be reduced. Also choose doctors who believe in informed decision making. Making health/medical choices for your loved one can be stressful. Having doctors, nurses and paramedics who help you in decision making can reduce that stress.

3. Recruit People To Help: There is no shame or guilt in taking help from family and friends to take care of your loved one while you get a chance to recover and bounce back. You can also contact organizations and networks which provide support or access to resources or more information. Prana Healthcare is one such organization which sends attenders or nurses home to take care of your loved ones. No matter what you think you can or should do, the truth is you cannot bear the entire responsibility for providing care for a disabled loved one. The longer you expect any different of yourself, the more burned out you're going to get.

4.  Learn Coping Mechanism: Taking care of your loved ones can be a lonely affair. This isolation can lead to anger and guilt. Avoid this. Also do not use tobacco, alcohol or prescription drugs to cope with the stress.
Don't forget how important a role you are playing for the care recipient, the family and even the community. It may not have been the life you envisioned leading at this time in your life, but there is great value and nobility in your efforts. Don't forget that you're not an expert. You're a concerned and caring person doing the best you can. Make time to connect with a friend, confidante, counselor or spiritual advisor. Sometimes just having someone listen is more important than what's actually being said.
Many of us internalize our anxiety instead of reaching out for help, as we discussed earlier. Other family members may be waiting for a cue from you -- a more obvious cue than you may think is necessary -- before they get involved.

Care givers can suffer from depression, lower immunity, increase risk for diabetes, heart disease. So learn to take care of yourself.

Are You Depressed?

A recent research shows that Turmeric (Curcumin) can be used effectively to treat depression. This made us think whether Indians suffer less from depression because we use of lot of turmeric in our food and also because we have strong family support system. Interestingly this research is also from India.

We decided to check our assumptions. Few things which can be argued are, we no more have the same family system as 20 years back. Today, it is predominantly nuclear families. The elder stay alone and have empty nest syndrome. The food habits have also changed with emergence of fad for fast and processed foods. But are these leading to increased depression among Indians?

1. A recent Times Of India article quotes research and mentions that one in 5 women and one in 10 men suffer from major depression at some point of time in their life.

2. An  Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry in India (ASSOCHAM ) found that 42.5% of all corporate employees of India are suffering from depression or general anxiety disorder.

The above two articles may indicate that it is an urban problem restricted to young and middle aged. Unfortunately that is not true, depression is very common in rural areas also. The elderly with their own set of problems also have high incidence and prevalence of depression.

The reasons can vary for all these different group of people but they all struggle with the same depression.

The symptoms can be diverse like:

1. Persistent sad, anxious or empty mood

2. Loss of interest in hobbies or pleasure activities

3. Guilt feeling, Thoughts of pessimism and worthlessness

4. Chronic fatigue or loss of energy

5. Irritability and getting angry on others frequently

6. Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions

7. Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping

8. Overeating, or appetite los

9. Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts

10. Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment

Appendicitis- Antibiotics or Surgery?

Appendicitis is a common problem. On a rough estimate 20 lakh people in India might be diagnosed with appendicitis. Acute appendicitis is usually treated with Surgery. 15%-30% of these surgeries may be unnecessary as normal appendix is found after surgery,

A new study has found that antibiotic therapy alone can cure  appendicitis in majority of people and can make surgery redundant. In this well randomized study antibiotics alone successfully treated this inflammation in a majority of 273 carefully selected patients with uncomplicated, acute appendicitis.

So what this means is that, you need to discuss the option of antibiotic therapy with your treating doctor. Based on your history and other parameters the Surgeon may consider it suitable and safe to treat with antibiotics.

There have been advancements in surgical techniques also. Appendicectomy done by minimally invasive surgery has better recovery and lesser complication rate. This is not offered in all centers and under those circumstances one may opt for antibiotic therapy and later schedule a planned minimally invasive surgery.

Also this new study helps patients who are at high risk for surgery because of other complications like heart disease or pulmonary insufficiency.

t's great news that patients with uncomplicated, acute appendicitis now have two immediate treatment options. If you opt for surgery, you will never have to worry about getting appendicitis again. If you choose antibiotic therapy, there is a 27-percent risk that appendicitis will reoccur within one year.

Does "Bad Luck" Cause Cancer?

Cancer is a dreaded disease and is the second most common cause of death. All cancers are not same. There are good cancers and bad cancers. Also our understanding about what causes cancers has improved over time but still we need to know more.
In what way "luck" can play a role in cancer formation?
Well, the mutations, that is the damage which happens to the DNA, can be random and as it depends on chance, it can be attributed to luck.
So, scientists say, two thirds of cancers can be attributed to bad luck!
The agents which cause damage to DNA like tobacco, alcohol, UV rays, certain chemicals of course increase your "bad luck"!

The chances of developing cancer and bad luck are related to driving an auto mobile! The longer the drive/journey greater is the risk of cancer. Want to understand more about this analogy, read the article below.

  1. The mechanical condition of the car is equivalent to inherited genetic mutations. The number of problems in the car—bad brakes, worn tires —increases the risk of an accident.
  2. The road conditions on the way to the destination could be likened to the environmental factors in cancer. Worse conditions —slippery roads, poor visibility, dangerous curves—would be associated with a higher risk of an accident
